Jesus Is What God Has To Say

Episode Summary

What is the meaning of life?
Big question, I know. But it’s one we’ve all asked in some form.

What’s the point of all this?
Why am I here?
What does it all mean?
And maybe deeper still—what does God think about me?

In this episode of The Wilderness Devotional, we sit with the opening line of John’s Gospel, a passage that shaped how the early church saw Jesus… and how we’re meant to see Him too.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
— John 1:1

But for many of us, this verse doesn’t feel clear—it feels cryptic. What is “the Word”? Is it the Bible? A concept? A Greek term lost to time?

I share how, as a kid, I pictured a giant flying Bible flapping its leather wings across space. That was my understanding of “the Word.”
But over time, I came to see something far deeper, far more beautiful. Something that changed my whole view of what God is actually saying.

This episode is for anyone confused by the chaos of Scripture, or the silence of God.
It’s for the one who’s asking: If God could just say one thing to me… what would it be?

Going Deeper

“In the beginning was the Word…”

The Greek word here is Logos—a rich, layered word that meant more than just “word” to John’s readers.

To the Greeks, Logos was the divine reason, the logic behind all things.
To the Hebrews, it was the powerful speech of God that created the world.

To John?

“In the beginning was the Logos… and the Logos was with God… and the Logos was God.”

Jesus is the Logos.
Jesus is what God has to say.

This idea is everything.
It means that God’s ultimate message isn’t a rulebook.
It isn’t a moral checklist.
It isn’t an Instagram-ready quote about self-care or divine vibes.

God’s message is a person.
A man with dirt on His feet and compassion in His eyes.
A friend who knows rejection, pain, hunger, and loss.
A Savior who hung on a cross—not to shame you, but to rescue you.

“Jesus is what God has to say.”
— Me, but probably echoed by a thousand wiser voices before

This truth matters because life is confusing.
Scripture is confusing.
There are parts of the Bible that feel like they were written in another galaxy. (Looking at you, Genesis 15 and the young pigeon.)

And in those moments, we start to ask—What does God want from me?
Why is He so hard to understand?
Am I missing something? Am I not smart enough or spiritual enough to get it?

But when we start with Jesus, things begin to clear.

If Jesus is what God has to say, then we’re no longer fumbling in the dark for the heart of God.
We see it in the face of Christ.

“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”
— John 14:9

When Jesus lifts the head of a weeping sinner… that’s God’s message.
When He tells the paralyzed man, “Your sins are forgiven”… that’s God’s message.
When He climbs up on a cross, arms open to the whole world… that’s God’s message.

So what is God saying to you?

He’s saying:
I know you.
I see you.
I love you.
I’m not here to crush you.
I’m here to save you.

And not in some generic “He loves everybody” way.
But in a personal, intentional, chosen-before-you-were-born kind of way.

“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
— Romans 5:8

No one dies for someone they hate.
You don’t lay down your life for people you can’t stand.
Jesus did it because He was sure—sure that you were worth it.
Sure that you were lovable.
Sure that even at your worst, He still wanted you in His family.

That’s the Logos.
That’s the message.
That’s the heart of God.

So the next time you’re confused about a verse…
The next time life feels like noise and silence all at once…
Come back to Jesus.
Because Jesus is what God has to say.

Devotional: A Prayer for the Days God Feels Quiet

Father,
I confess…
Sometimes You feel distant.
Sometimes Scripture feels confusing.
Sometimes life is just too loud to hear You clearly.

But then I remember—
You’ve already spoken.

You said it in a manger.
You said it in a healing touch.
You said it in the Garden of Gethsemane, and in the cry from the cross.

You said it in Jesus.

Jesus is Your message.
Your heart.
Your Word.

So when I don’t know how to read Scripture…
Let me look at Jesus.
When I don’t know what to believe about You…
Let me look at Jesus.
When I feel unworthy, unloved, forgotten…
Let me look at Jesus.

Thank You that Your message isn’t condemnation, but mercy.
Not rejection, but invitation.
Not confusion, but clarity.

Jesus is what You have to say.
And I’m listening.

Amen.
